Friday Photos: Haute Couture at the DMA

Jean Paul Gaultier is well known for his creative use of unusual materials when crafting his clothing lines. While he employs many materials that are typical  of the fashion industry, such as silk, furs, tulle, and lace, he also experiments with more uncommon items such as wheat, chicken feathers, aluminum cans, trash bags, and human hair. It is this wide use of sometimes strange materials that inspired this Friday Photos edition of Haute Couture at the DMA.

Friday Photos: Haute Couture at the DMA

Jean Paul Gaultier is famous for his use of nautical-esque stripes in his designs. For this installment of Haute Couture at the DMA (inspired by the exhibition opening this Sunday) let’s focus our fashion-seeking eyes on the use of patterns within works of art. I love that the idea of a pattern (a repetitive form, order, or arrangement) is so universal that cultures from around the world have been using it for centuries!

Friday Photos: Haute Couture at the DMA

Inspired by the Dallas Museum of Art’s upcoming show, The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk, I decided to walk around the galleries and find some fashion statements within our own collection. I will start November’s Friday Photo series with a collection of hats that I think even Gaultier himself would have appreciated.

Friday Photos: Eerie Images

October is my favorite month.  It brings the transition from summer to fall, never-ending sweets, and Halloween: a hair-raising holiday that demands a sugar rush, costumes, and scaring people.  To pay homage to my favorite holiday, today’s Friday Photos feature eerie images found in our collection.  Remember, what is considered spooky is in the eye of the beholder; many of the objects listed here also represent significant cultural beliefs. 

 

Don’t forget to come search for other spine-chilling subjects in the Museum on October 30th, the last day of Art in October (and it’s free!).

 Masks are always appropriate for Halloween.

Friday Photos: Reunited, and It Feels So Good

Earlier this month, a beloved DMA painting was reunited with its pendant, the work of art that was meant to hang next to it.  These two paintings have been separated since 1806, when they were sold into two private collections.  I have heard about this mysterious pendant painting to A Mountain Landscape with Approaching Storm for years, but its location was unknown.  That all changed earlier this year, and A Grand View of the Sea Shore is hanging in the DMA’s European galleries until December 11.  I hope you’ll stop by and admire  it next time you’re at the Museum.

Matching Game: Words to Works

Who said it???

You’ve seen these artists express themselves with brushstroke, line, paint, and color, but have you ever heard them express themselves with words? Do these two forms of expression match up?

Play my game to see if you can match the art work to the art word!

Below you will find a list of quotes straight from the mouth of some of the masters of modern and contemporary art. Following the quotes are images of artworks by these artists in the DMA collection. They have been all mixed up, so it is up to you to pair the quote and the artist. I will reveal the answers next week in the comments section of this post.

Friday Photos: Art in October

Next month, the Dallas Arts District is celebrating Art in October for the third year in a row. Stop by the Museum all month long for a plethora of unique artful activities for all ages (and species).

Saturday, October 1st kicks off with Art in Motion, a public parade of decorated bikes and vehicles. Leave your oxen at home, only human-powered vehicles qualify for this procession!

The month of October is also Art Beyond Sight Awareness month.  Celebrate visual awareness with Sightless Studio Creations on October 1st.

Friday Photos: Mystery Artwork

Last Friday, I posted a scrambled image and a clue in the form of a rhyme.  The final Mystery Artwork is…Cylindrical vessel with ritual ball game scene.

This Maya vessel depicts a ceremonial ball game, in which the players hit a rubber ball with their hips, not with their hands or feet.  Who would have thought fusing art and games would be fun?  Tom Russotti, that’s who.  Tom is a visiting artist who is  designing and leading a hands-on teacher workshop in November called Art & Games.

One last visual before I sign off.   Another great reason to visit the Museum is that the art is always changing.  I was surprised to find this John Sennhauser hanging next to Gerald Murphy’s Watch on the fourth floor, and it has recently been added into my top five favorite works of art at the Museum.

Are you tired of pulling your hair out and biting your nails in order to know this week’s Mystery Artwork?  Never fear, for I have the answer!  Last week’s Mystery Artwork is…Mantle with condors

Now, for the third puzzler.  Just as before, I have given you a rhyme and an altered image of the mystery object.  You have one week to search through our online collection, or go gallivanting through the galleries.  Next Friday, I will reveal the mystery object and present the final Mystery Artwork.
