"Ghost" Post: A Farewell to the DMA

If this post feels a little spooky, it’s because I am submitting this from beyond the walls of the Dallas Museum of Art (OOOooooOOO)! My last day as the McDermott Intern for Gallery Teaching was two days ago, but I will miss the DMA so much that I couldn’t leave without a proper farewell! Thinking back on these last seven months, I realized just how many wonderful art-filled experiences I’ve had, but since I am limited to this one post, I’ve decided to share my top five:

  • Mark Bradford’s exhibition was the first non-collection show that I learned about at the DMA. His huge works of art are overwhelming, innovative, and have wonderful background stories. It is for all of these reasons (and more!) that I loved looking at this exhibition with my fourth-grade tour groups.

  • My next favorite work of art is the ancient Egyptian coffin of Horankh. I really enjoyed speaking about ancient Egypt during our Intern Share Sessions for the Docents. I am also fond of talking to fourth-graders about the process of mummification and the Egyptian gods and goddesses.

  • One of my favorite spaces in the Museum is the American silver gallery, because the pieces have such wonderful decorations and designs. Having worked in a Victorian-era historic house full of objects from the Gilded Age, I enjoy sharing these with school groups because they really encourage close looking.

  • Hannah and I noticed this little lady as soon as we started at the DMA, and she has been one of our “favorites” ever since. I think she is funny. Hannah thinks she is scary. Either way, she will be gracing the cover of the Me & My World docent guide that I revised as my internship project.

  • Last, but certainly not least, I must include the lovely ladies that I worked with during my time at the DMA. This is one of the most friendly, creative, and fun-loving group of people I have ever had the privilege to work with.  I knew that I could always count on them to provide me with words of  encouragement, whether we were discussing an upcoming project or belting out songs during a karaoke outing. I will miss them immensely. (Unfortunately, Nicole isn’t in this group photo, but I’m talking about her too!)

Last month, our docents were trained on the various art historical “isms” of the 19th and early 20th centuries.  Listening to that lecture reminded me what a great collection we have for examining the breadth of art history.  I encourage you to visit the Museum with your students to help bring their textbook to life in the galleries.

Friday Photos: Young Masters

Every year, I am impressed and amazed by our annual Young Masters exhibition, organized in partnership with the O’Donnell Foundation Advanced Placement Arts Incentive Program.  Since 1994, the O’Donnell Foundation has encouraged interest and success in AP Studio Art and AP Art History, adding AP Music Theory in 1998.  One of the clearly defined program goals is the recognition and celebration of students’ and teachers’ achievements.  This year, fifty-three original works of art were selected for inclusion in Young Masters out of a total of 651 submissions.  You can also listen to AP Art History essays and original music compositions on the DMA Mobi web site.

March happens to be Women’s History Month and to celebrate this month-long feminine fiesta, I have posted images of some of the Museum’s leading ladies.

The artistic superwoman, Georgia O’Keeffe is represented in the DMA’s collection and  in our current exhibition Youth and Beauty: Art of the American Twenties, which features six of her paintings.

Friday Photos: Splish, Splash!

From ancient Greek sculptures of Aphrodite with a vessel of bathing water, to paintings of bathers by turn-of-the-century artists like Cézanne, swimmers and bathers remain popular subjects throughout western art history. Why have so many artists chosen this subject? Perhaps it is because cleansing oneself is universal, or because bathing can be related to purity.

Our new exhibition, Youth and Beauty: Art of the American Twenties features a number of bathers and swimmers. With physical culture in its heydey, 1920s artists often presented bathers and modern swimmers as models of the ideal physique.

Friday Photos: Youth and Beauty

This Sunday is the opening of Youth and Beauty: Art of the American Twenties. With over sixty-five artists represented, this dynamic exhibition expresses life as an American in the period between World War I and the Great Depression. The “Roaring Twenties“, as they are known, may bring to mind iconic flappers and lively jazz music. From the outside this may seem like a period of frivolous fun, but taking a closer look reveals a complex time of transition. With the rapid urbanization of America, modern ideals and industry created a lot of change and disorientation, which can be felt throughout the exhibition. With so much to see and discover, don’t miss your chance to peer into the psyche of this topsy-turvy decade.

Friday Photos: Designing Exhibitions Workshop

Last Saturday, a dozen teachers explored exhibition design in a half-day teacher workshop, slipping in and out of the galleries before the crowds waiting for one last look at The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk.  We were thrilled to have Jessica Harden, DMA Exhibition Design Coordinator, take us through various galleries she had designed. As we looked at the work, she enlightened us on the effect of design elements on visitor experience. It was especially exciting to hear Jessica explain her creative process for the Gaultier exhibition, which is full of imaginative elements, such as a satin-tufted display case and graffiti-filled walls!

The teachers spent the second part of the day designing mini exhibitions of works in the DMA’s collection. They considered lighting, wall color, interactive components, mood, and object and visitor safety, pinning their layouts and ideas to project boards. The teachers ended the day by sharing how their chosen design elements expressed the focus of their exhibitions. Here’s the breakdown of our Exhibition Re-design Project.

Friday Photos: Face to Face

I am very excited to announce that this Sunday, February 12th is the opening of Face to Face: International Art at the DMA. This exhibition, comprised entirely of works of art from the DMA collection, honors and celebrates the contributions of our generous donors. As a result of their kind philanthropy, the DMA has grown into a diverse international collection. If you are a frequent visitor of the Museum, some or maybe even all of these artworks might be familiar to you, but their intriguing and unusual display design will have you looking at them in all new ways. The works of art will be presented in pairs of two, each coming from a different culture that share some kind of commonality. Through close looking and the guidance of thoughtful label text, the discovery of similarities between two seemingly dissimilar objects will provide a new perspective on the collection. An example of one of these provocative pairings is below.

Friday Photos: Welcome Andrea!

Andrea Vargas Severin, Coordinator of Teaching Programs

We would like to introduce you to Andrea Vargas Severin, our new colleague and friend.  As the newest member of the Teaching Programs and Partnerships team in the Education Division, Andrea will be responsible for various details related to our work with teacher audiences, including professional development workshops, teacher in-services, and the educator e-newsletter.  You can expect to see her out and about before too long, providing tours to visitors of all ages and coordinating several partnership programs.  She will also be a key member of the team that writes web-based teaching materials.

Andrea has a Masters of Art in Art Education with an emphasis on Museum Studies from the University of Texas at Austin and received her Bachelor of Arts degree in the History of Art and Studio Art from Vanderbilt University.  Her previous experiences at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts, the Richmond National Battlefield Park, and Mexic-Arte Museum will bring a fresh perspective to our work.  We are delighted to have her as a colleague.
